On October 30, 2025, Jerry Xia, founding and managing partner GEN Law Firm’s Shanghai office and California liaison office and co-chair of the firm’s patent and trade secret practice, attended the 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) in Washington, D.C.  and spoke on the panel “Hot Topics in AI” which discussed global IP law developments relating to AI in multiple jurisdictions including China, Japan, the US and Europe.

The panel was moderated by Jonathan Osha from Osha Bergman Watanabe & Burton, and also joined by the panelists Rhoades White, Jr. (US), Nobuyuki Tsujimoto (JP), and Paul Casbon (EU). Xia particularly shared the latest judicial practices and regulatory trends in China at the intersection of AI and IP. He started with an overview of China’s patent and copyright policies and case law relating to AI, followed by elaboration on hot issues such as: Chinese patent office’s examination approaches towards AI-related v. AI-assisted patents, authorship determination for AI-works, risk mitigation for AI training, platform content governance and data compliance requirements such as the latest AIGC labeling regulations in China. His views aligned with perspectives from other international speakers for a comparative study and offered practical guidance for multinational companies operating AI-related businesses or using AI tools in China.
