Professional Profile

Yin Chao is an attorney with a combined legal and engineering background, focusing on technology-driven dispute resolution and intellectual property protection. He has extensive experience in IP litigation and arbitration, including patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and software copyright disputes. He also brings strong practical insight into non-contentious matters such as patent portfolio strategy, IP due diligence, risk assessment, and compliance framework development.

Mr. Yin has particular strengths in handling patent and trade secret infringement disputes. He has represented clients in multiple high-profile domestic and cross-border IP matters across a wide range of industries, including semiconductor chips and integrated circuit layout design, medical devices, large-scale machinery and equipment, computer software, and energy and chemical engineering. Several of the cases he handled have been recognized in the Annual Case Highlights of the Intellectual Property Court of the Supreme People’s Court and as representative cases in the National Intellectual Property Administration’s annual “Top 10 Typical Cases” on patent administrative enforcement, earning broad recognition and positive feedback from clients.

On international and cross-border matters, Mr. Yin is familiar with overseas IP protection regimes and related policies, and has supported clients with tailored strategies and robust solutions in multiple international IP disputes. He also has strong experience in cross-border e-commerce IP enforcement and defense, with in-depth knowledge of platform rules and procedures (including Amazon). He has assisted numerous cross-border sellers in addressing patent and copyright infringement complaints and appeals on Amazon, and has helped clients achieve favorable outcomes in multiple Amazon APEX proceedings.

Prior to joining GEN, Mr. Yin worked at a leading patent agency in China, where he provided patent prosecution services to clients from Europe, the United States, and Japan, developing solid experience in drafting and prosecuting patents for international clients.

Ÿ   Represented a leading domestic semiconductor company in IP disputes with Japanese competitors, including patent invalidation and patent infringement matters, involving filter chip technologies.

Ÿ   Represented an RF chip company in an integrated circuit layout-design infringement dispute with a competitor, involving IC layout design.

Ÿ   Represented a French steel company in potential trade secret and patent ownership disputes with a domestic steel enterprise, and compelled the counterparty to settle, involving metal cold rolling mill technologies.

Ÿ   Represented a Japanese electromechanical equipment company in a series of disputes with a former employee and the company founded by that employee, including patent infringement, patent ownership, and trade secret misappropriation matters, involving gearbox/reducer technologies.

(II) Overseas IP Dispute Resolution

Ÿ   In a U.S. patent infringement lawsuit between a U.S. fitness equipment company and a Chinese fitness equipment company, served as China-side counsel for the Chinese company by providing litigation strategy advice, preparing IPR petitions, and assisting with discovery, involving automatic control and mechanical technologies.

Ÿ   In a series of U.S. patent infringement lawsuits between a leading Chinese optoelectronic lighting company and its competitor, served as China-side counsel for the latter and participated in the proceedings, involving electronic circuit technologies.

Ÿ   Represented a Chinese semiconductor manufacturing equipment company in IP infringement disputes with a European competitor in Germany.

Ÿ   Represented multiple U.S.-based Amazon sellers or rights holders in IP infringement disputes on Amazon, including the APEX program, patent and copyright infringement complaints and appeals, settlements, etc.

Ÿ   Provided patent prosecution services for a number of well-known multinational corporations in areas including mechanical manufacturing, materials processing, and energy/chemical engineering.

Ÿ   Assisted an international medical device company in patent licensing negotiations with a well-known Chinese medical device company, facilitating the execution of a patent license agreement, involving medical devices.

Ÿ   Provided freedom-to-operate (FTO) analyses and due diligence for multiple Chinese companies, including Maxscend, RELX, Envision AESC, Shanghai Shengjian, and Ningbo Jenscare, covering areas such as chips, e-cigarettes, power batteries, exhaust gas treatment, and heart valve prostheses.
